Sainte-Chapelle: Walls of Light
The upper chapel, reserved for the royal family and court, represents one of the greatest achievements of Gothic architecture. Advances in engineering allowed the walls to be reduced to slender stone supports, making room for fifteen magnificent stained-glass windows that rise nearly fifty feet. Together they contain more than a thousand biblical scenes, telling the story of Scripture from Genesis through the life of Christ and ending with the Book of Revelation.
As sunlight pours through the glass, the chapel is transformed throughout the day. Reds, blues, golds, and purples wash across the stone floor and columns, creating an atmosphere that medieval worshippers believed reflected the light of heaven itself. The architecture was carefully designed to inspire awe and to lift the eyes upward.
Looking around the chapel, I found myself thinking about the generations who have stood here before me. Kings and queens worshipped within these walls. The French Revolution threatened its survival, yet the chapel endured and was painstakingly restored during the nineteenth century. Today, visitors from around the world continue to pause in wonder beneath the same windows that have illuminated this remarkable space for nearly eight centuries.
