SS HOPE Shipboard Radio
The shipboard radio station from the SS HOPE, preserved at the Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum, represents the vital communications link between a ship at sea and the world on shore.

The vessel began its service as the USS Consolation, a United States Navy hospital ship commissioned in 1945. It treated wounded service members during the Korean War and became the first hospital ship equipped with a helicopter landing deck. After leaving naval service, it was transferred to the People-to-People Health Foundation and renamed SS HOPE.
The name HOPE represents “Health Opportunities for People Everywhere.” Between 1960 and 1974, the hospital ship completed 11 voyages to countries in Asia, South America, Africa and the Caribbean. Its doctors, nurses and technical personnel provided medical care while also training local healthcare professionals.
Reliable communication was essential to the ship’s work. Radio operators used equipment like this to receive navigational and weather information, coordinate with ports and coastal stations, and transmit official and personal messages. Coastal stations such as Chatham Radio/WCC helped connect ships operating far from home with land-based telephone and telegraph networks.
The preserved radio station represents more than maritime technology. It was part of a ship created to carry medical knowledge, treatment and training across international borders.

The Esta Manthos Indian Motorcycle Collection
Marty stood among rows of motorcycles at the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History. Their frames, engines, and handlebars changed from one machine to the next, while old advertisements and photographs filled the walls around them. This gallery was about more than a famous motorcycle name. Indian began in Springfield, and for decades […]
