Girona FC
As we walked through the medieval streets of Girona, absorbing as much of the city’s history as we could, an unexpected mural caught our attention. Beneath an underpass, two enormous faces looked out from a wall covered in Girona’s red-and-white colors. We did not know who the men were, but their commanding presence made it clear that they meant something important to the city. We stopped to observe—and to learn.

The mural portrays Girona FC captain Cristhian Stuani on the left and coach Míchel Sánchez on the right. Across the wall appears the Catalan phrase “Escrivint la història com una llegenda”—“Writing history like a legend.”
Founded in 1930, Girona FC spent much of its history competing in Spain’s lower divisions and did not reach La Liga, the country’s highest level, until 2017. Stuani joined the club that same year and became its captain, leading scorer and one of its most recognizable figures. Míchel arrived as coach in 2021 and helped transform the team into one capable of competing with Spain’s established football powers.
During the 2023–24 season, Girona remained near the top of La Liga for much of the year and ultimately finished third. That achievement earned the club a place in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in its history.
Girona artist Miguel Martínez created the mural in October 2024 at the request of Jovent Gironí, a local supporters’ group. What first appeared to us as an unfamiliar piece of street art proved to be a record of Girona’s living history—a city honoring two men who helped carry its football club onto the international stage.

Casa Masó
Standing along Carrer de les Ballesteries in Girona’s historic center, Casa Masó offers a fascinating contrast to the medieval buildings for which the city is best known. Its warm ochre exterior, dark wooden window frames, wrought-iron balconies and geometric arrangements of blue and green glazed tiles immediately distinguish it from the surrounding buildings. The façade […]
Inside the Cathedral of Saint Mary
Stepping inside the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona reveals a space very different from its elaborately decorated Baroque exterior. The façade is filled with statues, columns and carved ornaments, but the interior is dominated by the strength and simplicity of stone. Massive piers rise into pointed arches, ribbed vaults stretch across the ceiling and […]
Sant Pere de Galligants
Nestled below Girona’s ancient walls near the small Galligants River, the Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants is one of the city’s most important Romanesque landmarks. Its sturdy stone church and distinctive octagonal bell tower seem naturally suited to their quiet setting, surrounded by the medieval streets, gardens and fortifications of Girona’s Old Quarter. The […]
