Cap de Crist: A Face Carved in Stone

A head tilted backward, closed eyes, and strongly defined features give Cap de Crist a presence that invites a pause. The stone sculpture represents Christ, but it concentrates the subject into a single face. There is no cross or surrounding scene to explain the moment. Expression and the shape of the stone carry its meaning.

Created between 1969 and 1971, the work is by Catalan sculptor and draughtsman Josep Cañas i Cañas. A self-taught artist, Cañas favoured rounded forms and simplified geometric volumes. In this sculpture, broad cheeks, a prominent nose, and the curved outline of the head create a sense of weight and stillness. The town’s artistic interpretation emphasizes serenity beyond physical suffering.

Cap de Crist came to Sitges through the collection donated by Dr. Jesús Pérez Rosales. His gift connected private collecting with public access to art, allowing works to become part of the town’s museums and shared spaces. The Maricel Museum also holds sculptures and drawings by Cañas from the Pérez Rosales collection.

The sculpture has occupied several settings. It first stood in the Racó de la Calma, near the town’s museum complex, before moving to Baluard Vidal i Quadras in the 1990s. The municipal sculpture catalogue now places it in front of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Vinyet. Its changing location forms part of its history as a work encountered in everyday public life.

That accessibility has also brought damage. Weather, graffiti, touching, and losses to the facial features affected the stone over time. A conservation project reported by Museus de Sitges in January 2025 cleaned the sculpture and repaired damaged areas, including earlier alterations around the nose and mouth.
