Veterans Memorial Walkway

One of the more thoughtful veteran’s memorials I have encountered was the Veterans Memorial Walkway located on the Franklin Town Common. Rather than a single statue or monument, the memorial was designed as a place to move through, almost lie creating a room for remembrance within the landscape of the common itself.

Dedicated on November 11, 2018, the walkway honors Franklin veterans from all branches of military service. The memorial is dedicated to Franklin’s veterans “who gave their lives in service of our country, along with all veterans of the armed forces and are forever memorialized.” The design invites visitors to walk directly through the memorial space surrounded by the names of those who served.

The long brick pathway is lined with granite markers and engraved names. Instead of a single focal point, you walk a path that feels very personal and reflective. This memorial creates a space for all veterans and for all the continuing connection between military service and community life.
