Tribute to “Fall River”
Along the waterfront near Battleship Cove, I came upon the solemn memorial dedicated to the crew of the USS Fall River, the heavy cruiser named in honor of the city. Positioned beneath the towering Braga Bridge and overlooking Mount Hope Bay, the memorial serves as a lasting tribute to the men who served aboard the ship during the final months of the Second World War and the early years of the Cold War.

Commissioned in July 1945, the USS Fall River was a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser and the lead ship of her class’s final subgroup. Although she arrived too late to participate in combat during World War II, she went on to serve as the flagship of the United States Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean and later the Second Fleet in the Atlantic. In 1949, the ship played a prominent role in President Harry Truman’s “Cruise to Nowhere,” an eleven-day goodwill voyage attended by members of Congress and foreign dignitaries.
The memorial honors not only the ship itself but also the officers and sailors who called the cruiser home. Bronze plaques list the names of crew members and preserve the memory of their service. Though the USS Fall River was decommissioned in 1954 and eventually scrapped, the city’s connection to its namesake vessel endures.
For nearly a decade, sailors serving around the world did so aboard a vessel bearing the name of Fall River, Massachusetts. Today, this quiet memorial ensures that both the ship and the men who served aboard her will not be forgotten.

Commissioned in 1942, the South Dakota-class battleship measured 680 feet in length and carried a crew of more than 2,300 officers and […]
Carousel No. 54
One of the treasures we discovered in Fall River was the beautifully restored Looff Carousel at Heritage State Park. As much as I enjoyed the hand-carved horses and colorful artwork, I was fascinated to learn the story of Carousel No. 54, built in 1920 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. Originally installed at Lincoln Park in nearby North […]
