Fire Department Bell

Sitting quietly today as a memorial, this bell was once an important part of Newton’s fire alarm system. It came from the Number 3 Engine House, where fire alarms were transmitted over the bell system and could be heard throughout the surrounding neighborhood. Long before radios, pagers, and computerized dispatch systems, the ringing of a bell like this was how firefighters knew that help was needed.

The plaque explains that the bell system helped inform firefighters of the location from which an alarm had been sounded. When this bell rang, its sound carried through the neighborhood, summoning firefighters to respond. For residents who heard it, the ringing would have been immediately recognizable as a signal that somewhere nearby there was a fire or another emergency.

As technology changed, bells like this were no longer necessary for communicating alarms. But rather than allowing this one to disappear, it was preserved as a memorial to the generations of Newton firefighters who served the community.

The final words on the plaque give the bell its continuing purpose. It is dedicated “to all firefighters who answered the call and gave this city and each of us the legacy of one of the finest fire departments in the country.”
