Jagala Waterfall Lahemaa National Park
One of the memorable stops during my journey through the Estonian countryside was Jägala Waterfall, the largest natural waterfall in the country. Although Estonia is known for its forests, medieval cities, and Baltic coastline, it also offers peaceful natural landscapes that are often overlooked by visitors.

As my guide drove through the rural countryside toward Lahemaa National Park, we paused to enjoy this broad curtain of water cascading over limestone cliffs. Unlike the towering waterfalls found in mountainous regions, Jägala’sbeauty comes from its width and the quiet setting that surrounds it.
The waterfall has long been a destination for travelers exploring northern Estonia and reflects the country’s unique geology. Over thousands of years, the Jägala River has carved its way through layers of limestone that were formed when this region lay beneath a warm prehistoric sea. During the winter, the waterfall often transforms into a spectacular wall of ice, attracting photographers from across Europe.
