Poe’s Cottage
Tucked inside Poe Park in the Bronx is a small, white cottage that feels worlds away from the city that now surrounds it. The modest home was the final residence of Edgar Allen Poe, who moved here in 1846 seeking quiet and relief for his ailing wife, Virginia.
At the time, this was rural farmland far removed from the bustle of Manhattan. This cottage offered a measure of peace during a period of profound personal struggle. It was here that Poe wrote some of his most famous works.
Virginia died in the cottage in 1847, and Poe himself would die just two years later. This small home preserves a glimpse into his final years. The rooms are sparse and simple. The cottage is operated by the Bronx County Historical Society.
Stepping into his home is like entering a moment in literary history. Great literature emerged from these quiet rooms and personal grief.
