Michael K. Aselton Memorial Park

Michael K. Aselton Memorial Park honors a Barnstable police officer who lost his life while serving the community. Patrolman Aselton had been with the Barnstable Police Department for four years when he was killed in the line of duty on March 29, 1983, at the age of 25.

Aselton was conducting radar enforcement on Old Stage Road in Centerville when a speeding motorcycle passed his position. He pursued the motorcycle in a marked police cruiser, but during the chase his vehicle went out of control and struck a tree. His death was officially recognized as occurring in the line of duty, and his name is also inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The waterfront park that carries his name lies near the corner of South and Ocean streets, overlooking Hyannis Harbor. Today, its lawns, walkways and outdoor performance space are used for concerts, festivals and community gatherings, preserving Officer Aselton’s memory within the community he served.
