Kennedy Legacy Trail
The Kennedy Legacy Trail is a self-guided walking route through downtown Hyannis that connects places associated with John F. Kennedy and his family. The 1.6-mile trail contains ten stops, each marked by an informational panel and a circular sidewalk emblem modeled after the nautical signal flags that reflect the family’s strong connection to sailing and the sea.

The route explores several parts of the Kennedy story, including the family’s years on Cape Cod, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy’s role as family matriarch, St. Francis Xavier Church, Kennedy’s 1960 presidential election acceptance speech, the creation of Cape Cod National Seashore, the Peace Corps and the family’s contribution to the region’s maritime heritage. It eventually leads toward the waterfront and the John F. Kennedy Memorial overlooking Lewis Bay.
Large historical photographs displayed along Pearl Street add another dimension to the trail. Mounted on the exterior of the Sturgis Charter Public School, they show the Kennedy family sailing, relaxing and gathering at their Hyannis Port compound. These informal scenes present them not only as national political figures but also as a family spending its summers together on Cape Cod.
The sidewalk markers, interpretive panels and oversized photographs bring the Kennedy story into the streets of Hyannis. Rather than confining this history to a single location, the trail allows visitors to follow it through the community and landscape that became closely connected with the family’s private lives and public legacy.
