Hon. Lindley M. Webb

Every historic community is shaped by people whose names are remembered and many others whose quiet work goes unnoticed. Ocean Park is no exception. While visitors are often drawn to its beautiful cottages, Temple, and peaceful village green, the community’s success was made possible by generations of dedicated volunteers who gave freely of their time, talents, and leadership.

Among the most influential was Hon. Lindley M. Webb. Webb served the Ocean Park Association for more than thirty years, beginning in 1891, as president, legal counsel, director, and secretary. During a period when Ocean Park was growing into one of New England’s best-known religious summer communities, he helped guide nearly every aspect of its development. His legal knowledge, steady judgment, and willingness to serve provided the stability needed for the Association to preserve the community’s founding mission while adapting to changing times.

Webb is described as one of “God’s Noblemen,” a phrase that reflects the values upon which Ocean Park was founded. Leadership here was viewed not as a position of prestige but as an act of service. Men and women from many professions devoted themselves to maintaining the grounds, overseeing finances, planning programs, and ensuring that future generations could enjoy a place dedicated to faith, education, music, and fellowship.

As I learned more about Ocean Park, I realized that its history is not defined solely by its buildings or location along the Maine coast. It is equally the story of individuals like Lindley Webb, whose decades of quiet, faithful leadership allowed the community to flourish. More than a century later, Ocean Park remains much as he and so many others envisioned: a place where service to a community can leave a legacy that endures long after those who built it are gone.
