Hommage au Capitaine Dreyfus

This bronze monument honors Alred Dreyfus, whose wrongful conviction became one of the significant political controversies in modern French history.

Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French Army, was falsely accused in 1894 of passing military secrets to Germany. Based on forged documents and influenced by widespread antisemitism, he was convicted of treason, publicly stripped of his rank and sentenced to life imprisonment on the remote penal colony known as Devil’s Island off the coast of French Guiana. The case divided France for more than a decade and exposed deep currents of prejudice within French society. Evidence eventually proved his innocence, and after years of public debate and advocacy, Dreyfus was exonerated and reinstated into the French Army.

The statue depicts Dreyfus standing proudly in uniform while holding the broken sword that symbolized the public degradation and disgrace. The sculpture represents dignity and perseverance and the eventual triumph of justice over prejudice and false accusation.

The Dreyfus Affair transformed France and became a powerful lesson in civil rights, and the dangers of intolerance. Hommage au Capitaine Dreyfus stands as a tribute not only to Alfred Dreyfus but also to the enduring principles of truth and justice.
