Every Journey Shapes a Child

Looking at this photograph of our family in Florence brings back so many wonderful memories. Like so many of our travels, this trip wasn’t simply about seeing famous places. t was about experiencing the world together. We explored museums, walked ancient streets, crossed historic bridges, discovered new cultures, and shared countless conversations along the way. Looking back, I realize these experiences became part of our children’s development just as much as any classroom lesson.
As chiropractors, Marty and I have always understood that healthy child development depends on much more than physical growth. A child’s brain is constantly being shaped by movement, sensory experiences, curiosity, relationships, and the opportunity to explore new environments. Every new sight, sound, language, taste, and adventure creates opportunities for the developing nervous system to grow and adapt.
That philosophy is at the heart of our book, All in the Head. While the book focuses on the importance of cranial function and neurological development, it also reminds us that development is a dynamic process. Children are designed to interact with their world. They learn by moving, discovering, asking questions, and experiencing life with the people who matter most.
Our travels became an extension of that belief. Whether we were standing in Florence, hiking through a national park, or exploring a small New England town, we weren’t simply taking vacations; we were giving our daughters opportunities to experience history, art, geography, architecture, and different cultures firsthand. Those experiences helped shape not only what they knew, but who they became.
Looking back at this photograph reminds me that some of the greatest investments we make in our children are not found in things we buy, but in the experiences we share. Every journey becomes part of their story, helping to build confidence, curiosity, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning. In many ways, that’s what All in the Head is really about, supporting children so they can fully engage with the world around them and become everything they were designed to be.

Letting Children Step into the Story
When our daughters were young, we didn’t want their education to exist only in books and classrooms. We wanted them to experience the things they were learning about. To walk through historic places, hear the stories, touch what they were allowed to touch, ask questions, and interact with the people bringing the past to life. […]
Your Intuition Matters
If I could sit across from every new mother, I would tell her: Your intuition matters. In my years as both a mother and chiropractor, I’ve seen how often parents sense that something isn’t quite right, even when professionals reassure them that everything is “fine”. Fine is not the same as thriving. In our book: “It’s […]
Parenting with Both Sides of the Brain: Where Science Meets Intuition
The philosophy I embraced as a mother was grounded in a deep trust: that there is an Innate Intelligence with the body, and that the power that makes the body heals the body. These principles became anchors for me. They are reminders that wounds would heal, fevers would break, and that the body was always […]
