Ernie Pyle’s Final Column

May 11, 1945

Dearest Reader,

Among my parents’ papers was this newspaper clipping titled Ernie Pyle V-E Column Is Found, with the handwritten date of May 11, 1945. I do not know why they chose to save it, but its preservation suggests that it held some significance for them during the closing days of World War II.

The article reports the publication of one of Ernie Pyle’s final newspaper columns after his death. Pyle, one of America’s most respected war correspondents, was known for writing about the experiences of ordinary soldiers rather than military strategy or political leaders. His dispatches brought the realities of war into American homes and made him one of the most widely read journalists of his generation.

Pyle was killed on April 18, 1945, while covering the fighting on the island of Ie Shima near Okinawa, just weeks before Germany surrendered. The column described in this clipping had been written before his death and was discovered among his personal papers. Published only days after Victory in Europe Day, it offered readers one final opportunity to hear the voice of a journalist whose writings had become closely associated with the American experience of the war.

Whether my parents saved this clipping because they admired Ernie Pyle, because it marked the end of the war in Europe, or for another reason entirely, I cannot say. What I do know is that it survived among their papers for decades, providing another small glimpse into the events and people that mattered to their generation.

Sincerely, Nancy Watson
