Ataloa Cabins
Walking through Ocean Park, it is easy to see that not every visitor stayed in one of the grand boarding houses or hotels. Tucked beneath the tall pines are clusters of modest seasonal cabins like the Ataloa Cabins, reminders that Ocean Park was designed to be a place where families of many backgrounds could enjoy life by the sea.
From its founding in 1881, the Ocean Park Association envisioned more than a religious camp meeting. It sought to create a community where visitors could spend an entire summer enjoying worship, education, music, recreation, and fellowship. As Ocean Park grew, cottages, guest houses, inns, and small cabin communities developed to accommodate the increasing number of families returning year after year.
The Ataloa Cabins reflect the simplicity that has always been part of Ocean Park’s character. Built among the pines rather than overlooking the beach, they offered an affordable and comfortable way to experience the community. Life here was centered not on luxury but on long walks to the ocean, evenings at the Temple or Porter Memorial Hall, conversations on front porches, and the friendships that developed over generations of summer visits.
