The Derby LZ Memorial
Another section of Johnny Ro Memorial Park contains this emotional memorial within the park – The Derby LZ memorial.

The bronze sculpture of a kneeling soldier holding his helmet creates a powerful image of grief and remembrance. This statue captures a private human moment that expresses the weight carried after war and loss.
The stone marker being the sculpture reads “Derby LZ”, dedicated to fallen Worcester County soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan. The smaller sign beside the stone explains that the memorial contains “a piece of the actual rock in Iraq”. This fragment of the landscape where these soldiers served and died, was brought back home to Massachusetts. This created a direct connection between the distant battlefields and the local communities forever changed by these conflicts.
The term “LZ” stands for Landing Zone a military term associated with helicopter operations and combat zones. Naming the memorial “Derby LZ” gives the space the feeling of sacred ground.
