The Grotto of the Annunciation
During our visit to Nazareth, Marty and I entered the Basilica of the Annunciation, one of Christianity’s most important pilgrimage churches. Within the lower level of the basilica is the Grotto of the Annunciation, traditionally believed to be part of Mary’s home and the place where the Angel Gabriel appeared to her.

According to the Gospel of Luke, Gabriel told Mary that she would give birth to Jesus. Her acceptance: “Let it be done to me according to your word” became one of the defining moments of the Christian faith. The Annunciation marks not only the promise of Christ’s birth but also Mary’s extraordinary response of trust, courage, and obedience.
The Latin inscription at the grotto reads, “Verbum caro hic factum est”, meaning “Here the Word became flesh”. The inclusion of the word “here” gives the inscription particular meaning. It expresses the Christian belief that the events of the Gospel occurred not only in some distant spiritual realm, but in a real place, within the ordinary surroundings of Mary’s life.
Churches have stood over this sacred site for centuries. The present basilica, completed in the twentieth century, was constructed above the remains of earlier Byzantine and Crusader churches. Its modern architecture surrounds and protects the much older grotto at its heart.
Surrounded by the immense basilica, the simple stone chamber seemed especially intimate. Here, Christian tradition remembers Mary receiving the Angel Gabriel’s message and responding with the faith and courage that would change the course of history.
