Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site
Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., preserves what has often been called “America’s Main Street.” Established as a National Historic Site in 1965, this famous avenue stretches between the United States Capitol and the White House, linking the legislative and executive branches of our government. Few streets in the world have witnessed as much history.
For more than two centuries, presidents have traveled this route on inauguration day, military victory parades have celebrated the nation’s achievements, and countless Americans have marched to make their voices heard. From suffragists seeking the right to vote, to veterans, civil rights leaders, and peaceful protesters, Pennsylvania Avenue has long served as the stage where citizens exercise one of our nation’s greatest freedoms: the right to assemble and petition their government.
Pennsylvania Avenue is much more than a roadway connecting two famous buildings. It is a place where the history of our nation has unfolded in full public view. Looking toward the Capitol, it is easy to imagine the inaugurations, parades, celebrations, and demonstrations that have taken place along this broad avenue.
