A Dive into Our World
While walking along Ermou Street in the center of Athens, we encountered this unusual bronze fountain at the intersection with Voulis Street. The sculpture, created by Greek artist Kyriakos Rokos in 2000, is titled “A Dive into Our World”.

The work combines water with an assortment of abstract shapes, textured surfaces, and partially recognizable forms. Unlike the balanced figures and familiar stories found in the ancient sculpture of Athens, this piece does not offer one obvious subject or explanation. Its details invite those passing by to stop, look more closely, and decide for themselves what they see.
Its title suggests an exploration of the complicated world surrounding us. The sculpture appears to contain many different elements joined into a single form, perhaps reflecting the overlapping experiences, ideas, and uncertainties that make up modern life. Water continually moves around its base, adding motion to a work already filled with contrasting shapes and textures.
Athens is most often remembered for its ancient temples, classical statues, and archaeological treasures. This fountain reminded us that it is also a living city where contemporary artists continue to add their own voices to its streets. Standing among the shops and pedestrians of one of Athens’s busiest commercial areas, “A Dive into Our World” brings art into the ordinary rhythm of daily life.
