Porter Memorial Hall

Walking through Ocean Park, it quickly becomes apparent that this is more than a collection of summer cottages. From its earliest days, the founders envisioned a community where faith, education, music, and fellowship would enrich everyday life. While the Way of Truth Temple became the spiritual heart of Ocean Park, Porter Memorial Hall became one of its great gathering places.

Dedicated in 1902, Porter Memorial Hall was built as a memorial to members of the Porter family, whose generosity and commitment helped support the growing Ocean Park community. By the turn of the twentieth century, Ocean Park had matured beyond its beginnings as a Free Baptist camp meeting. Thousands of visitors attended summer programs, creating a need for additional space where people could gather for lectures, concerts, social events, educational programs, and community celebrations.

The words painted across the front of the building—”Hall in the Grove—capture the spirit of Ocean Park. Rather than constructing an imposing civic building, the founders created a welcoming hall nestled among the pines, blending naturally into the landscape that had first attracted visitors seeking rest, learning, and spiritual renewal along the Maine coast.

Over the years, Porter Memorial Hall has hosted countless concerts, community dinners, lectures, theatrical performances, children’s activities, and meetings. Like the Temple, it reflects Ocean Park’s belief that a healthy community is built not only through worship but also through opportunities to learn, celebrate, and spend time together. Generations of families have walked through these doors, creating traditions that have been passed from parents to children and now to grandchildren.
