The Miles Between Them

Among the papers my mother saved is a small cloth pouch that, at first glance, might be easy to overlook. Printed across it are the words “U.S. Mail from Seattle, Wash.” A leather strip closes the bottom, and still attached to it is the original mailing tag.
The tag is addressed to Miss Mary Hannigan, my mother.
That name immediately helps place this small piece of family history. My parents married in May 1944, so my father sent this to her before their marriage, while he was in the service and they were separated by thousands of miles.
Printed on the tag is a wonderfully appropriate message:
“May this Little Bag with a View or Two, Lessen the Miles between Me and You.”
Inside were several tiny souvenir photographs of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. My father was seeing a part of the country far removed from my mother’s life in New Hampshire, and this little bag gave him a way to share some of it with her.
It was a souvenir, but it was also something much more personal.

Exploring the Future
Among my father’s papers is this collection of letters from Fireside Industries, a Michigan company that sold arts and crafts through home representatives. The correspondence was addressed to him in Martinsburg, West Virginia, when he was still a teenager, long before he would marry my mother or begin raising a family. At first glance, these […]
Cartoonists’ Exchange of Pleasant Hill, Ohio
One of the businesses contacting my almost seventeen-year-old father in the fall of 1937 was the Cartoonists’ Exchange of Pleasant Hill, Ohio. The Cartoonists’ Exchange was not a traditional school. It was a correspondence course, part of a larger movement in early 20th century America that brought education directly into people’s homes. At a time when college was […]
Christmas 1941 — St. Vincent’s Home, Saginaw, Michigan
Among my father’s papers are several Christmas cards that help document a period of his life that I know only in pieces. In the weeks before Christmas 1941, he was living at St. Vincent’s Home at 800 Howard Street in Saginaw, Michigan. The envelopes themselves establish this address, while the postmarks and Christmas greetings place […]
