The Miracle of Santo Cristo dos Milagres
When we arrived in the Azores in May 2025, we had no idea we were stepping into one of the islands’ most sacred and remarkable celebrations. The streets of Ponta Delgada were closed to traffic, storefronts shuttered, and the city was blanketed in flowers. What we thought was an ordinary weekend turned out to be the Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, a centuries old tradition unique to the Azores.
Over the next few days, we learned the story behind this moving festival. The devotion centers on the image of Senhor Santo Cristo, housed within the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança. The revered image depicts Christ crowned with thorns, covered in gold and embroidered robes. It was brought to the Azores in the 16th century as a gift to the convent’s nuns.
In the late 1600’s, during a time of earthquakes, a devout nun promoted public veneration of the image. She organized a procession through the streets of Ponta Delgada, praying for mercy and the quakes ceased. The people saw it as a miracle.
We visited the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, which was kept open for prayer throughout the celebration. On one side of the church stood the chapel of Santo Cristo, where the gold image gleamed among the floor covered in flowers. On the other side rose the main altar, crowned by an ornate gilded ceiling.
Coming to the Azores during this festival was a special treat for we got to see the blossoms and garlands that decorated the city. The streets and squares of Ponta Delgada are charming but during Santo Cristo, the city blooms into something extraordinary.
